KiVa is a whole-school-programme funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education that is currently being implemented in 2260 Finnish comprehensive schools (about 75% of all comprehensive schools in the country). In KiVa, there is a strong emphasis on influencing the bystanders to make them show that they are against bullying and to make them support the victim, rather than encourage the bully. KiVa includes several universal actions, such as student lessons, and an anti-bullying computer game. Furthermore, it includes indicated actions, that is, individual and small group discussions with the bullies, victims, and prosocial classmates who are challenged to support the victimized peers. First evaluation studies have revealed exceptionally good outcomes: KiVa significantly reduced the risk of bullying others and of being victimized in one school year, and had significant positive effects on numerous outcome measures including bystander behaviors, school motivation and perceptions of classroom and school climate.

Course title: Learning Through Professional Practice: Promoting Social Relationships Among Young People

This 6-weeks course in the Adult Education Centre targets teachers and healthcare professionals and aims to enable the participants to explore the concepts, research and practice in the field of children and young people’s social relationships. It offers interesting activities on conflict resolution, mediation, peer support, as well as strategies for improving the school and classroom climate.

As a part of our tour we will also introduce you into the basics of Second Life, e.g. how to use text and voice chat, how to move your avatar, different ways of finding your way at our campus (e.g. by walking, flying, using maps, teleports) and much more.

Between 28th of September and 7th October, 2010 six seminars on ”European projects tackling school bullying and violence” will be held at our campus.
The seminars aim to present selected projects from different European countries that have been implemented in different European countries. Participants can more about these selected projects and initiatives and have the opportunity to share and discuss their views with other participants from Europe and other countries across the globe.
The lengths of each of the six seminars we will be approximately two hours and will include short introductions into the basics of Second Life (e.g. using text and voice chat), a presentation by the lecturer introducing into the project or initiative and discussions between the seminars’ participants. The seminars will be in English and are open. Each seminar will be open for up to 15 participants. Participation is free of charge.
For participants who don`t have experiences with Second Life so far, we are happy to provide guided tours through our virtual campus in which we show you our campus main areas and give you introductions into the basics of Second Life.

Now click the the “sign up” button on the top right of the site that opens.
Step 2: Now create your username and password and choose an appearance for your avatar.
Step 3: Within a few minutes you will receive an e-mail request from service@mail.secondlife.com to activate your account (In case don`t get an e-mail within a few minutes, check your spam folder just in case the e-mail has been shifted there).
Step 4: Once you will have activated your account, click the “continue” button on the site that opens and follow the instructions for downloading the Second Life client.
Step 5: Open the Second Life client and login with your username.
You will now arrive at the AVC Gateway in the middle of the virtual Anti-Violence-Campus (AVC). You can explore the campus by walking or flying or by using the maps with teleports that you can find at all major locations of the AVC.

In the ground floor of the Research and Information Centre (RIC) you can find posters that display a selections of web sites on school bullying and violence validated by the International Observatory on Violence in school for their high quality and reliability.
On further posters on the ground floor we provide a world-wide snythesis of state-of-the art information on school bullying and violence from leading experts in the field: “What is school violence?” (author: Eric Debarbieux), “The consequences of school violence on students” (author: Catherine Blaya), “Students and violence: psycho-pathologigal sense and functions of violent behaviour in an academic setting” (author: Gregory Michel) and “Evaluating school violence” (author: Eric Debarbieux).

In the second half of June we will offer guided tours through our campus again. During this tour we will show you around the campus, take a look at some of our buildings and facilities such as the auditorium and classrooms at the Adult Education Centre, the exhibition hall and the virtual cinema in the Creative Art Centre, the Research and Information Centre and the Exhibition Area. Our tour will also give you a first insight in how to move your avatar, how to find your way at our campus and how to communicate with other users.

6-weeks course for teachers and healthcare professionals
When: May 17 – June 25, 2010
Where: Adult Education Centre
This 6-weeks course in the Adult Education Centre targets teachers and healthcare professionals and aims to enhance their knowledge on current research and practice about violence reduction and prevention. It offers interesting activities on conflict resolution, mediation, peer support, as well as strategies for improving the school and classroom climate. The course will be facilitated by Helen Cowie and Pat Colliety (University of Surrey, UK). Show ‘Cyber Scream’. Live performance of a show followed by a discussion with the audience on cyberbullying.
Where: In the Arc Theatre (Basement of the Creative Arts Centre).
Learn about the horrors of Cyberbullying and its impact on young people’s lives by attending the show “Cyber Scream”. It focuses on a girl’s feelings and thoughts while being a victim of bullying attacks. The audience will get to know how the girl tries to deal with her situation and what it really means for people to be bullied. After the play, you will get the opportunity to discuss your thoughts and questions with the rest of the audience. Everyone interested is of course invited to come and see the show. These unique workshops, where real life role-play exercises are taken to another level, peoples’ avatars take on another character in order to work through bullying related issues and resolve conflicts. They are fun, educational and often powerful. Participants will be given outlines of the scenario and their characters before entering the role-play, much like a typical role-playing game, with one person moderating throughout. Audience members are welcome to observe and contribute through discussion. Anti-bullying Workshop for Youth Workers, Carers, Guardians, Parents and Teachers

This workshop is ideal for those who work predominantly with young people and are looking to build on their anti-bullying knowledge, strategies and skills, but are strapped for time and money to travel to workshop sessions and conferences. The aim of the workshop session is to engage in a series of discussions and exercises in order to share ideas and discuss solutions to various situations in which bullying takes place. Before we open up the Anti-Violence-Campus (AVC) to a broader public we are interested in getting some feedback on what we could do better. For this purpose we offer guided tours through our campus at which we will explain you a bit about the background of the AVC.
